This is a positive tree species that can grow up to 8-10 meters tall. It thrives in warm and humid climates, showing strong resistance to heat and high temperatures. It is hardy, prefers fertile soil, and can grow in slightly acidic or weakly alkaline conditions. This plant has strong germination ability, responds well to pruning, and is resistant to air pollution. Although the mature shoots of seedlings can survive low temperatures (frost) in northern Guangdong, they may still suffer from frost damage. Therefore, it's essential to use cold protection measures when planting these seedlings. Based on years of practical experience in cultivating weeds and flowers, we have developed several effective cultivation methods worth considering.
For the growing medium, you can use peat soil, straw mushroom mud, river sand, red mud, or pond mud. For cutting seedlings, a mix of 8 parts peat soil and 2 parts river sand, or 8 parts fermented straw mushroom mud and 2 parts river sand, works best. When planting, a combination of 7 parts peat soil or fermented straw mushroom mud, 3 parts red mud, and 3 parts pond mud will provide optimal growth conditions.
Fertilizer management is crucial during the fast-growing phase. Keep the soil consistently moist and apply diluted fertilizers regularly. A common practice is to use 1000 times diluted urea water every two weeks. Additionally, mixing peanut bran with Norwegian compound fertilizer once a month can further enhance growth.
To support the weeping branches and flowers, it’s recommended to insert bamboo poles for support. The red-thousand-storey branches are relatively soft and grow to about 50 centimeters in length. Using bamboo supports helps promote a strong trunk and more compact growth.
Pruning and shaping the flowering red millet depends on its intended use. It can be trimmed into cylindrical, spherical, tower-shaped, or natural forms, depending on the design requirements. Choosing the right pruning method ensures a neat and attractive appearance.
Pest control is also important. During the rainy season, young plants are prone to melasma, which can lead to complete leaf loss in severe cases. To prevent this, it's advisable to use preventive treatments such as carbendazim, thiophanate-methyl, or chlorothalonil at a dilution of 800-1000 times. Flowering red carpets are particularly vulnerable to nematodes, so it's recommended to treat the soil with carbofuran, line g, or Kekedan before planting to ensure healthy growth.
