The morphological characteristics of rhubarb

Morphological characteristics

Polygonaceae Rheum is a perennial herb. Rhizomes and roots for medicinal purposes (see Rhubarb, coloring book). Cultivated species are mainly R. palmatum, followed by R. palmatum var. tanguticum and medicinal Rhubarb (R. officinale). China has a long history of using rhubarb in medicine, and at the beginning of the Western Han Dynasty, it has been mass-marketed and shipped to Europe. It is one of the major export herbs in China.

1. Rhubarb palmetto also known as: Kui Ye rhubarb, North rhubarb, Tianshui rhubarb.

Perennial tall herbs. Thick rhizomes. Stems erect, 2m high, hollow, smooth and glabrous. Basal leaves large, long and stout fleshy, ca. as long as leaves; leaves broadly cardioid or suborbicular, ca. 40 cm in diam., 3-7 deeply palmately lobed, often divided again on each lobe. Small papillae, pilose below; cauline leaves smaller, shortly stipitate; stipules sheathed, densely pubescent. Inflorescence a large cone-shaped, terminal; pedicel slender, related to the lower middle section. Flowers purplish red or reddish purple; tepals 6, ca. 1.5 mm, in 2 turns; stamens 9; styles 3. Achenes have 3 edges, wings ribbed, dimples slightly apex, base nearly cordate, dark brown. Flowering from June to July, fruiting period from July to August.

2. Tanggut Rhubarb also known as: Chicken claw rhubarb.

Perennial tall herbs, about 2 meters high. Stems glabrous or hairy. Root leaves slightly rounded or broad-shaped, 40 to 70 cm in diameter, 3 to 7 palmately lobed, lobes narrow and long, often pinnately lobed, apex acute, base cordate; stems and leaves smaller, The handle is also shorter. Inflorescence panicle shaped, often dark purple when young, also greenish white, branches closely, branchlets straight up; flowers small, with longer pedicels; tepals 6, 2 round; stamens generally 9; ovary triangle , Style 3. Achenes triangular, winged, apically rounded or dimpled, base cordate. Flowering from June to July. Fruit period from July to September.

This species resembles the rhubarb of palmate leaves. The main difference is that the leaves are deeply split, and the lobes often have triangular-shaped lanceolate or narrow-linear shapes, and the lobes are narrow and long. Inflorescence branches tightly, straight upward, close to stem stem.

3. Medicinal rhubarb also known as: South rhubarb.

Annually tall herbs, about 1.5 meters high. Stems erect, sparsely pubescent, densely knotted. Root leaves long-stemmed, leaves rounded to ovoid, 40 to 70 cm in diam., palmately lobed, or only nicked and coarsely serrate, apex acute, base cordate, usually 5 main veins, base , above the hairless, or near the state 'vein with sparse, small mastoid, the following hair, mostly distributed in the veins and leaf margins; stem leaves smaller, stalk is also short; leaf sheath simple, sparsely short hair, Split to the base. Panicles, broad-shaped, branched, flowers small, 3-4 mm in diam., 4--10 clusters; tepals 6, pale green or yellowish-white, 2-rounded, inner rounder oblong, ca. 2 mm long The apex is round, the edges are not very neat, the outer wheel is slightly shorter; the stamens 9, not exposed; the ovary triangular, calyx 3. Achenes triangular, winged, ca. 8–10 mm long, 6–9 mm wide, apical concave, red. Flower and fruit period from June to July.

The main difference between this species and the above two species is that the basal leaves are 5-lobed, the lobes are large-toothed or wide-triangular; the stipules sheath is membranous, relatively transparent, with short hairs. The flowers are large, yellow-greenish, and the buds are oval-shaped. Fruit branches develop and the edges of the samara are opaque.

4. R. rhaponticum (a cold-tolerant perennial plant cultivated with its plump fleshy petiole). Edible rhubarb most suitable for growth in cold temperate regions. Petiole pickle, often used with strawberries to make stuffing, or in fruit tarts and preserves, also uses liqueurs and aperitifs. The roots have a strong cold-resistance, and some of the above-ground autumn frost freezes. The leaves contain poisonous substances. In some parts of the Himalayas, people only cook wild leaves. Edible rhubarb is native to Asia. In the early spring, large clusters of leaves are produced from underground stems. The leaves are large in size. They are 60 cm wide (2 inches) wide and have large petiole diameters of more than 25 mm (1 inch) and up to 60 cm. It blooms in late spring and its buds are large. It is located in the center of the leaf cluster. The flowers are small and numerous, green and white. Samara is ribbed and contains one seed.
