Subject: Lily Family Member: Ophiopogon
Specific Distribution Area: This plant is commonly found across both northern and southern regions of China
Biological Characteristics: The plant typically grows to about 30 cm in height, with slender roots and numerous branches. Some varieties may develop a scallop-like shape, featuring grape-like stems. The leaves are thin yet leathery, with a striking golden yellow margin that contrasts with vertical stripes of silvery white and emerald green. The base of the plant forms dense clumps. The flowers are reddish purple, growing in clusters of four to five within pods, arranged in slender racemes that can reach up to 8–16 cm in length. It blooms during summer and autumn, with flowering stalks ranging from 30–90 cm tall, often taller than the foliage. The seeds are spherical, initially green, and turn black when mature. Phnom Penh Ophiopogon prefers moist and shady environments, tolerates cold well, and thrives under jungle shade, at meadow edges, or near water features. It doesn't require rich soil but benefits from consistently moist and fertile conditions. The leaves remain evergreen, with new growth emerging in mid-April. Flowering lasts for an extended period, with flower stalks continuously produced from late June through September. Seeds mature by mid-September. For potting, a mix of dried fish pond mud and garden soil works best.

Its striking golden yellow foliage makes it more valuable and sought after compared to regular Ophiopogon. Known as a rare, drought-resistant, and evergreen ground cover, it is ideal for gardens across China’s northern and southern regions. It adds vibrant color throughout the year, making it a popular choice for ornamental planting. This plant is excellent for use in pots, modern landscape designs, forest borders, lawns, water features, rock gardens, and as a table-top ground cover. Its versatility and visual appeal make it a favorite among gardeners and landscapers alike. Whether used in traditional gardens or contemporary outdoor spaces, Phnom Penh Ophiopogon brings both beauty and resilience to any setting.
