Meat pigeons matching hatching feeding management

To ensure healthy breeding and prevent early mating, young pigeons should be separated by sex at around 5 to 6 months of age. This practice helps avoid inbreeding and maintains the quality of the breed. Before they reach sexual maturity, male and female pigeons should be kept in separate groups. At four months of age, it's recommended to divide them into two groups—males and females. Within each group, same-sex pigeons should be housed in small enclosures, with 50 to 100 birds per pen. Male pigeons should have a lower stocking density to reduce stress and promote better health. Once pigeons reach 6 to 7 months of age, they are considered sexually mature and ready for mating. There are two common methods for pairing them: natural mating and artificial pairing. In natural mating, pigeons are allowed to choose their own partners, but this can lead to inbreeding and lower-quality offspring. The alternative is manual pairing, where breeders are matched by humans. Before mating, males are placed in the same area or loft for 2–3 days to get accustomed to the environment. Then, females are introduced in the same way to encourage bonding. After pairing, pigeons usually begin nesting within 7–10 days. Each pair lays two eggs, with the second egg typically laid 1–2 days after the first. Both parents take turns incubating the eggs. A small, circular nest measuring 15 cm in diameter and 5 cm in height is prepared using loose straw or similar materials to provide a comfortable hatching environment. Artificial incubation lasts about 8–19 days, with slightly longer periods during summer. Around 4–5 days into incubation, an egg candler can be used to check for development. If blood vessels appear as a spider-like pattern, the egg is fertilized. If the vessels look thick and straight, it may be unfertilized or dead. A second check occurs after 10 days. If the contents are watery and the shell appears grey, the embryo has died. If one side of the egg darkens while the other becomes clear due to an expanding air cell, it indicates normal development. By day 18, the chicks begin to hatch naturally. If only a small hole is visible on the shell, human assistance may be needed to help them out. Within 2–3 days after hatching, parent pigeons increase their food intake and produce "pigeon milk" to feed their young. Both male and female pigeons are capable of producing this nutrient-rich substance, ensuring the survival and growth of the chicks.
