Largemouth bass breeding management technology
1. Cultivate high-quality, large-sized fish seedlings. Before starting the breeding process, the cultivation ponds were thoroughly sterilized, and clean, suitable water was introduced, especially for large fish species in May. In addition to feeding leeches (red worms), domestic fish fry, and a mixture of fish paste, it's important to provide a balanced diet to ensure healthy growth.
Largemouth bass should be raised using sub-standard sifting and broaching techniques to improve survival rates and promote faster growth. Large seedlings are typically reared intensively and transferred to pond culture around mid-May.
2. Domestication is the process of training largemouth bass to feed on formulated feed instead of live or natural food sources. The ideal time to begin domestication is when the fish reach 4 to 5 cm in length. Initially, the feed should closely resemble their original diet—fresh and highly palatable. Once the fish become accustomed to eating, the feed can gradually be replaced with commercial or homemade compound feed.
Domestication is usually carried out in cement pools or small ponds with a gentle water flow, either natural or artificially maintained. Using spot induction helps the fish develop conditioned reflexes. It's normal for the fish to show hesitation or refusal during the transition; these behaviors should be monitored but not overreacted to. Over time, they will adapt completely. Homemade feeds can be prepared using manual or mechanical mixing methods. Floating feeds are preferred as they enhance feeding efficiency and reduce waste.
3. Management practices include the use of both artificial and chilled feed. Most farms in the Pearl River Delta rely on chilled feed during the adult stage. The feeding amount is calculated based on the number of fish and their total body weight, typically 1.5% to 2.5% of their body weight, and the food should be fully consumed within one hour. Water quality must be carefully maintained, and regular disease prevention measures should be implemented to ensure the health and productivity of the fish.
