English name: Chinese Crinum
Common names: 18 Bachelor, Wen Zhulan
Family: Amaryllidaceae
Morphological characteristics: This is a perennial herb with thick, long, sword-shaped leaves. It produces umbel-like flower clusters, typically bearing 20 to 30 flowers. The tepals are linear, white in color, and emit a pleasant fragrance. It blooms in July. The fruit is a capsule containing seeds, which are green when immature. There are over 100 species within the genus Crinum.
This plant is often cultivated alongside the red-flowered variety known as Wenshu Lan, which has purple flowers and originates from Sumatra. Another similar species is the North American Garcinia, which features white flowers and narrow leaves. Native to the tropical regions of Asia, it is commonly found in Guangdong, China, and also grows wild in Hainan.
Chinese Crinum thrives in warm climates and is not tolerant of cold temperatures. It prefers slightly shady conditions and requires moist but well-drained soil. It does not tolerate salt or alkaline soils, so it should be planted in fertile, well-aerated ground. Its beautiful, fragrant flowers make it a popular choice for gardens and ornamental planting.
