Colorful leaves cold plum - beauty Mei (Figure)
Scientific name: Armeniaca mume, commonly known as Beauty Mei.
Family: Rosaceae (Rose family), related to apricots.
Morphological characteristics: This is a horticultural hybrid, created from double-flowered plum and regular plum. It is a deciduous small tree with oval-shaped leaves, ranging from 5 to 9 cm in length, and displaying a striking purple hue. The flowers are pink, densely arranged, and bloom after the leaves have opened. Flowering occurs in spring, with light purple blossoms that are double-petaled. The flowers open from top to bottom, starting around March 18th and continuing through mid-April. The calyx tube is wide and bell-shaped, with five nearly round or oblate sepals. There are 15 to 17 petals, with 5 to 6 smaller ones at the base. The pedicel measures about 1.5 cm. Most of the stamens are present, contributing to the full, showy appearance of the blooms.
Beauty Mei is a rare variety of plum blossom, introduced by Professor Chen Junyu, a renowned plum blossom expert from the United States. Known for its exceptional beauty, this cultivar stands out not only for its stunning flowers and long blooming period but also for its attractive branches and foliage. Its bright red to deep red leaves remain vibrant throughout the year, adding a striking visual element to the landscape. The branches are elegant and well-formed, making it a favorite among gardeners and botanical enthusiasts.
One of the most remarkable features of Beauty Mei is its ability to withstand extremely cold temperatures, down to -30°C. This hardiness makes it suitable for cultivation in a wide range of climates. When propagating, it can be grafted onto peach or apricot rootstocks, with a grafting success rate exceeding 95%. This high compatibility ensures strong growth and healthy development of the plant.
Whether admired for its ornamental value, resilience, or unique coloration, Beauty Mei is a standout addition to any garden or collection of flowering trees. Its combination of beauty, durability, and rarity makes it a highly sought-after species among horticulturists and nature lovers alike.
