Wen Shulan (Figure)
Scientific name: Crinum asiaticum (var. sibiricum)
English name: Chinese Crinum
Alias: 18 Bachelor, Wen Zhulan
Family: Amaryllidaceae
Morphological characteristics: This is a perennial herb with thick, long, sword-shaped leaves. It produces an umbel inflorescence with 20 to 30 flowers. The tepals are linear, white in color, and emit a pleasant fragrance. It typically blooms in July. The fruit is a capsule containing seeds, which are green when immature. There are over 100 species within the genus Crinum.
This plant is often cultivated alongside other varieties such as the red-flowered Wenshu Lan, which has purple blooms and originates from Sumatra. Another related species, North American Garcinia, features white flowers and narrow leaves. Native to tropical regions of Asia, it is commonly found in Guangdong and Hainan, China, where it grows wild.
Crinum prefers warm climates and is not tolerant of cold temperatures. It thrives in slightly shaded conditions and requires moist but well-drained soil. It does not do well in salty or alkaline soils. For optimal growth, it should be planted in fertile, well-draining soil. Its attractive appearance and fragrant flowers make it a popular choice for gardens and ornamental landscaping.
