New surgery reduces the rate of spinal tuberculosis

A groundbreaking treatment for spinal tuberculosis has significantly lowered the risk of disease recurrence. The study, which took eight years to complete, was recognized with the first prize in the 2005 Ningxia Autonomous Region Science and Technology Progress Award and was presented at the National Health Science and Technology Conference.

According to Wang Zili, head of the research team and director of the orthopaedics department, spinal tuberculosis accounts for 40% to 75% of all bone and joint tuberculosis cases, primarily affecting children and young adults. Given that Ningxia is one of the regions with the highest prevalence of tuberculosis in China, this new treatment offers a much-needed solution.

Instead of following traditional surgical methods that involve extensive lesion removal, the team opted for a more targeted approach—partial resection of the affected area while preserving the surrounding healthy tissue. They then applied ultra-short-course chemotherapy, comparing it with standard and short-term chemotherapy regimens through clinical trials. All three groups showed excellent outcomes, with no relapses reported. Among them, the combination of ultra-short-course chemotherapy and partial resection proved most effective, reducing the treatment period from 1.5 to 2 years down to just 4.5 months. Despite the shorter duration, the cure rate remained comparable to the other methods.

This advancement not only eases the financial burden on patients and the healthcare system but also improves patient compliance with treatment. By shortening the course of chemotherapy, it reduces the likelihood of drug resistance due to irregular medication, making the therapy more effective overall. The method has since been widely adopted in hospitals across Ningxia, Guangdong, and Shaanxi, marking a significant step forward in the fight against spinal tuberculosis.
