Squid is a widely popular freshwater fish across the country, with a strong market demand in South Korea and Japan. First, selecting the right breed is crucial. In the Chengdu area, most ponds focus on heterotrophic silver carp, followed by Peng Zexi. Xiangyun carp and other varieties are less commonly raised. Although Xiangyun carp grow faster, they often face challenges at market due to poor sales performance. While Ziyu Silver Stork may not grow as fast as Xiangyun, they outperform Peng Zexi and are the dominant species in Chengdu’s plains. About 90% of local farmers raise them. Peng Zexi, though slower in growth, is favored by foreign investors, making it a key export variety. It's important to note that some seed producers lack responsibility, leading to poor-quality stock. Farmers should seek reliable suppliers, sign contracts, and avoid being exploited by unscrupulous traders. Second, designing an efficient stocking strategy is essential. Traditional pond farming has evolved into more productive systems, with per-mu yields increasing from 100-200 kg to 500-1000 kg. Some ponds even exceed 2 tons per mu. To reduce costs, many Chengdu farmers now raise large-sized fry themselves. This allows earlier stocking, longer growing periods, and higher profits. Specialized ponds are used for breeding, with 10,000 fingerlings per mu stocked at 5–10 cm. By year-end, these can reach 400–700 kg per mu. Adult ponds typically hold 2,000–4,000 fish per mu, aiming for 500–1,500 kg of commercial fish by the end of the season. Third, careful selection of compatible species is necessary. Avoid stocking grass carp or common carp, as they compete heavily for food. Instead, include 20% of other species like tilapia or Wuchang fish. This helps maintain balance and ensures better growth. Fourth, acclimating fish to surface feeding is vital. It’s easier to tame fish when they are young. Adding attractants to feed, maintaining proper stocking density, and keeping water quality optimal all help speed up the process. Feeding should be consistent and evenly distributed to ensure uniform growth. Fifth, improving feeding efficiency through advanced techniques can boost productivity. Increasing dissolved oxygen levels by aerating and adding fresh water improves growth and reduces feed waste. Organic fertilizers can also be used to enhance natural nutrition. Installing automated feeders ensures even distribution, helping weaker fish get enough food. Feed particle size must match the fish’s size. Smaller fish need finer feed, while larger ones require coarser particles. Daily feeding rates depend on water temperature, fish size, and oxygen levels. Generally, juveniles eat 5–8%, while adults consume 2–3%. Adjustments should be made based on environmental conditions. Finally, disease prevention is critical. Though carp are generally hardy, improper management can lead to outbreaks. Common diseases like saprophyte, scale disease, and trichinosis require timely treatment. Regular water testing, proper sanitation, and using appropriate medications can minimize losses and ensure healthier fish. By following these practices, farmers can achieve better results and sustain long-term success in squid and carp farming.
