The main pond is used to raise young shrimps, which helps regulate their population in the autumn and improve their commercial size. This method also allows for the use of sick shrimps and diseased fish, reducing disease occurrence, eliminating wild fish, and increasing feed efficiency.
Before planting, the pond was dredged and left exposed for one month to ensure it was ready for stocking. About 15 days prior to introducing the young shrimps, the pond was disinfected using 150–200 kg of lime per acre. Seven days before stocking, 100–200 kg of base fertilizer per acre was applied to cultivate the water quality and promote a healthy environment for the shrimps.
Healthy, full-bodied, egg-bearing shrimp with a body length of at least 5 cm were selected for stocking. The best time to release them is during the peak spawning season of green shrimp, which occurs in May and August. A density of 8–10 kg per mu (approximately 667 square meters) is recommended.
Approximately 40 days after the first batch of shrimps was stocked, larvae were introduced at a density of 30–50 fish per mu. Before stocking, the seedlings were disinfected using a potassium permanganate solution to prevent infections. The fry were chosen to be non-invasive, lively, and healthy, and were released in small quantities at the end of March to help maintain water quality.
Feeding is done once daily when the water temperature is between 12–22°C, typically between 2–3 PM. When the temperature rises above 23°C, feeding is done twice a day—once in the morning from 6–8 AM and again in the afternoon from 4–6 PM. The primary feed is commercial shrimp feed, and the amount is adjusted based on the shrimp’s growth, size, water conditions, and weather. The goal is to ensure no leftover food remains on the feeding tray.
Water quality management is essential. From late autumn to early spring, the pond is refreshed once a month, with 10–20% of the water replaced each time. An aerator is turned on in the evening and at noon, with a runtime of 2–3 hours during midday. In anticipation of typhoons or thunderstorms, the aeration time can be extended slightly. If the pH level drops below 7, quicklime is sprinkled across the entire pond to adjust it to between 7.5 and 8.5.
Disease prevention follows the principle of "prevention first, combined treatment." The pond must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before stocking, and care must be taken to avoid injuring the shrimps. Sick or weak shrimp should not be introduced. Regular use of disinfectants helps maintain good water quality and reduces disease risks.
Harvesting generally takes place in two cycles: spring shrimp are caught from April to early July, followed by a break in August. Fall harvests occur from September to November. At the end of the year, the pond is dried out to catch crickets or other small aquatic organisms.
