In recent years, the elderly with high incidence of Parkinson's disease, which is a neurodegenerative disease, the main symptoms include limb tremor, slow movement and so on. The cause of Parkinson's disease is still unclear, but a new study suggests that Parkinson's disease may be an autoimmune disease: the patient's immune system is "confused" to attack brain neurons.

A protein called α-synuclein in the brain of Parkinson's disease abnormally accumulates, causing the death of neurons secreting dopamine nearby. Previously, the medical community believed that alpha-synuclein would "poison" neurons, destroying the signaling of the nervous system, leading to Parkinson's disease.

But in recent years some new discoveries have shown that this protein may not directly kill neurons, but induces the patient's own immune system to attack neurons as foreign bodies.

Researchers at Columbia University and other institutions reported in a new issue of Nature that an experiment found new evidence for the above speculation. They extracted blood samples from patients with Parkinson's disease and healthy people, mixed them with some protein fragments secreted by neurons, and then compared the immune responses between the two. These fragments include fragments of alpha-synuclein.

It was found that healthy people's blood responded very little to these protein fragments, while T cells in the blood of patients with Parkinson's disease produced a strong immune response to α-synuclein fragments. This suggests that the patient's immune system has a "memory" of alpha-synuclein that has previously been exposed to and attacked the protein and its nearby neurons.

This new discovery will help in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. However, the researchers said that it is not yet possible to determine the causal relationship between the immune system attacking neurons and suffering from Parkinson's disease. They plan to block the above immune response in the next experiment and see if this can curb the disease.
